Description
Pro-Grade Automatic Pond & Aquaponic Filtration for Large Systems — Up to 4,000 Gallons
When your pond or aquaponic system demands more, the AST Endurance™ Bead Filter 4000 delivers. Built on AST’s patented PolyGeyser® technology, the 4000 is the top-of-range model in the Endurance series — engineered for serious hobbyists, commercial aquaponic growers, and professional pond installations requiring reliable, high-capacity filtration with virtually no daily maintenance.
Like every Endurance filter, it self-backwashes automatically throughout the day using air pressure alone, captures and concentrates sludge for easy weekly removal, and runs without a single internal moving part. Pre-filled with permanent bead media at the factory, it’s ready to work from day one — and built to keep working for years without replacement media or filter overhauls.
Key Features
Fully Automatic Pneumatic Backwash Cleans itself multiple times daily without user intervention. No pump shutdowns, no manual valve adjustments, no electric timers. Air pressure drives the entire backwash cycle — triggering automatically every 2–3 hours and completing in just 3–5 seconds.
Industry-Lowest Water Loss Wastes less than 5% of the water that conventional filters discard during backwashing. Dirty backwash water is captured and recycled internally rather than expelled — protecting your water volume and water quality.
Dual Mechanical & Biological Filtration The buoyant bead bed traps suspended solids while simultaneously hosting vast colonies of beneficial nitrifying bacteria. The result is superior clarity and healthy water chemistry — from a single, compact unit.
Large-Capacity Sludge Storage Chamber The oversized sludge basin concentrates waste efficiently, keeping servicing intervals to once or twice per week. Simply open the drain valve, discharge the sludge, and close — done in under a minute.
Low-Profile, Pump-Optional Design The Endurance 4000’s low-profile build supports gravity-fed, airlift operation — allowing the entire system to run without a motorized water pump, slashing ongoing energy costs.
No Moving Parts. No Replacement Media. Ever. Arrives pre-filled with durable, buoyant bead media that never degrades, clogs, or requires replacement. The internal geometry is elegantly simple — nothing to wear out, break down, or service.
Ideal For
- Large Koi Ponds — up to 4,000 gallons
- Commercial & Semi-Commercial Aquaponic Systems — grow-out tanks, deep water culture, and NFT setups
- Small-Scale Fish Hatcheries — fingerling through grow-out phases
- High-Stocking-Density Tanks — tilapia, trout, perch, catfish, and other species
Optional Add-Ons
| Add-On | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Automatic Sludge Discharge | Fully automates sludge removal — the filter becomes virtually maintenance-free |
| UV Light Module | Provides continuous algae control under warm or high-light conditions — ideal for outdoor installations |
How It Works
The Endurance 4000 runs a self-regulating, air-driven 4-stage backwash cycle — completely hands-free:
- Normal Filtration — Water flows up through the bead bed; air slowly charges the internal chamber, building pressure
- Early Backwash — Air triggers bead agitation, scrubbing solids and biofilm free in a 3–5 second burst — no water leaves the system
- Late Backwash — Dirty water sweeps all accumulated solids into the dedicated sludge basin
- End Backwash — Clean water refills the filter; beads reform the bed; filtration resumes immediately
Sludge collects over several days and is discharged in under a minute when ready — or fully automatically with the optional auto-purge add-on.

Aquaponics Bonus
The Endurance 4000’s sludge chamber partially mineralises captured organic waste, generating nutrient-dense water ideal for plant grow beds. During the backwash cycle, this water can be automatically routed to your system — with delivery volume and timing easily dialled in to maintain optimal nitrate levels for fruiting crops or leafy greens.
