Description
Flocell XFM Fines Media
Flocell XFM Fines Media has been specifically engineered to optimise the mechanical filtration performance of the Flocell XFM Fines Filter 900 and XFM Fines Filter 1200.
Unlike conventional loose filter media, XFM Fines Media uses a patented open-cell structure with a unique series of fins around the outer surface. These fins provide additional surfaces for fine particles to be captured and retained within the media pack.
The result is a high-capacity mechanical filtration system designed for applications where removal of fine suspended solids is critical.
Why XFM Fines Media Works So Well in Flocell XFM Filters
The media and filter are designed as a complete filtration system. The open-cell XFM media allows water to pass through the media pack while providing numerous surfaces and voids where suspended particles can separate and become retained.
Within the XFM filter, millions of media elements act in a similar way to small lamella separators. They reduce local water velocity and encourage fine particles to settle into the voids within the media pack. This provides high solids-retention capacity while maintaining efficient water flow.
The media’s finned profile is particularly important for fine filtration, providing additional surface area to capture fines as water passes through the filter.
Flocell describes XFM Fines Media as being specifically engineered for its XFM Fines Filters, with independent testing by IFTS and Cranfield University supporting its filtration and retention performance.

Why Use XFM Fines Media in the XFM 900 & 1200?
The XFM Fines Filter 900 and XFM Fines Filter 1200 are specifically designed around XFM Fines Media. Using the correct media is therefore essential to achieving the intended filtration performance of these systems.
Flocell XFM Fines Filter 900
The XFM 900 has a 0.64 m² filtration area and is designed to operate with approximately 250 litres of XFM Fines Media. The filter has a 900 mm diameter and a 63 mm connection.
Flocell XFM Fines Filter 1200
The larger XFM 1200 provides approximately 1.12 m² of filtration area and uses approximately 1,200 litres of XFM Fines Media. It has a 1200 mm diameter and a 90 mm connection.
The difference in media volume allows each filter size to operate with the appropriate media bed for its filtration area and application.
| Filter | Filter Diameter | Filtration Area | XFM Fines Media |
|---|---|---|---|
| XFM 900 | 900 mm | 0.64 m² | 250 L |
| XFM 1200 | 1200 mm | 1.12 m² | 1,200 L |
Designed for Fine-Solids Removal
XFM Fines Media is particularly suited to applications where conventional filtration systems can struggle with fine suspended solids.
The structured open-cell media provides a large number of pathways and retention points throughout the media bed. As water travels through the filter, suspended particles are captured within the media rather than simply passing through.
Flocell’s XFM technology is designed for high-efficiency fine-solids removal, with the manufacturer reporting filtration capability down to very fine particle sizes depending on operating conditions and influent characteristics.
Important: Actual filtration performance depends on particle characteristics, influent water quality, flow rate, media condition and operating conditions.
Works with Flocell Air Clean Technology
One of the major advantages of the XFM system is the way the media works with the filter’s Air Clean Technology.
Instead of relying on a conventional water-intensive backwash, air is introduced into the filter to agitate the media pack and release retained solids.
The open-cell structure allows the media to be effectively agitated during the cleaning cycle, helping remove accumulated solids while minimising water consumption.
This combination of high-retention media + air cleaning allows the XFM system to operate for extended periods while reducing water and energy requirements associated with conventional filtration systems.
Ideal Applications
Flocell XFM Fines Media is suited to a wide range of fine-solids filtration applications, including:
- Aquaculture water treatment
- Fish farming and recirculating aquaculture systems
- Public aquarium filtration
- Tertiary filtration
- Back-end water polishing
- Pre-discharge filtration
- Industrial wastewater treatment
- Process-water filtration
- Post-DAF filtration
- Post-lamella separation
- Post-flocculation filtration
- Continuous fish-tank water maintenance
