PROJECT SUMMARY

Engineering for a unique and sensitive native species

Pure Aquatics was engaged by Taronga Conservation Society Australia to deliver a highly specialised aquatic life support system for a purpose-built platypus breeding facility. This project required an exceptional level of precision, combining environmental engineering with species-specific biological requirements to support one of Australia’s most unique and sensitive native animals.

The facility was designed to house both male and female platypuses within four interconnected pond systems, each carefully engineered to replicate natural habitat conditions while maintaining strict control over water quality and environmental stability. Given the platypus’ sensitivity to changes in water chemistry, temperature, and flow, the system demanded robust redundancy, real-time monitoring, and seamless operational reliability.

Pure Aquatics developed a comprehensive life support system that integrates multi-stage mechanical filtration, high-capacity biological treatment, and advanced UV sterilisation. The system ensures optimal water clarity, pathogen control, and stable nitrogen cycling—critical factors in maintaining platypus health and encouraging breeding behaviours.

A key component of the project was the integration of automated monitoring and alarm systems. These systems continuously track water parameters such as dissolved oxygen, temperature, and turbidity, providing instant alerts to facility operators if conditions move outside acceptable thresholds. This level of automation significantly reduces risk while improving operational efficiency.

The completed facility represents a benchmark in conservation-focused aquatic system design. It provides Taronga with a controlled, replicable environment that supports long-term breeding programs and contributes to the preservation of this iconic species. The project highlights Pure Aquatics’ ability to deliver technically complex systems tailored to highly specialised biological requirements.
