Nitrifying Bacteria

NMI+ The Ultimate Biofiltration Bacteria Blend

The Complete Biological Tool Kit: Whether you are starting a new system, recovering after disruption, or pushing higher biomass and feed rates, Fresh or Marine applications, NMI+ is the key to nitrogen management.

Modern aquaculture systems rely on more than just individual additives—they depend on a balanced and well-supported biological ecosystem. At the core of this approach is NMI+, which establishes and maintains the nitrification process that converts toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate.  Adding NMI+ ensures the right strains are present, building that population to accelerate systems capacity prior to introducing your stock.  Thus providing a more stable environment at start-up, stabilises water quality, reduces start up stresses for you and your stock whilst improving long term performance.

The Pure Aquatics NMI+ biological filtration blend supports every stage of nitrogen processing and microbial stability. NMI+ even converts Nitrate to Nitrogen, taking that biological step one step further than anything else on the market.

You can simply add NMI+ to your existing system to boost your biofilters capacity safely with fish present.  Whether you’re adding to a new filter with fish present and ramping up your fish biomass progressively, or by cycling the filter fishless, adding NMI+ is the key.  When pairing with Bloom, Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Nitrite, work together to support reliable nitrification and microbial balance. So biofilters can be commissioned, tested, and balanced in a controlled, fishless environment—allowing operators to build and verify biological capacity before stocking or increasing feed loads.

Bloom enhances this process by supplying the essential nutrients and trace elements microbes need to grow efficiently, reducing cycling time and strengthening biofilter resilience.  Just dose once along with NMI+.

Then add Sodium Nitrite (also one-off dose) and Ammonium Chloride (at an incrementally increasing dose rate) to mimic fish nutrients artificially via a controlled nitrogen source.  This combination seeds your microbiological water purification system, enabling robust removal of toxic nitrogen compounds when your valuable stock is introduced.

The foundation of effective biofiltration

NMI+ contains high-performance nitrifying bacteria that convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate—forming the backbone of safe and stable aquaculture systems. It is trusted for new system start-ups, biofilter recovery, and increased production loads.

Key benefits:

  • Rapid biofilter start-up and commissioning

  • Reduced ammonia and nitrite spikes

  • Improved system resilience during expansion or recovery

Pair with:

  • Bloom to accelerate microbial establishment
  • Ammonium Chloride for fishless cycling
  • Sodium Nitrite to strengthen nitrite conversion

Primary Uses:

  • Biofilter start-up and commissioning

  • Fishless cycling

  • Biofilter recovery after cleaning, power outages, or treatments

  • Increasing feed rates or biomass

Typical Application

  • Dose directly into biofilters or high-flow areas

  • Can be used in freshwater and marine systems

Indicative Dosage

  • Start-up / Cycling:
Dose according to system volume and biofilter size (commonly applied as an initial seeding dose, followed by repeat doses during early cycling).

General Dose Rate – 1ml/100L System Water

  • Recovery / Maintenance:
Lower repeat doses following disruption or increased load.

Exact dosing depends on system design, temperature, salinity, and loading. Contact Pure Aquatics for Technical guidance on your specific application.

Best Practice

  • Dissolved oxygen > 5 mg/L

  • pH ideally 7.2–8.2

  • Disable UV and ozone during initial colonisation (24–72 hours)

  • Maintain adequate alkalinity – (Note that this can be the most under rated aspect of biological filter start up). Alkalinity (kH) is required for the microbes for the biological assimilation and thus breakdown of Ammonia to Nitrite to Nitrate. Without a base level of alkalinity, you will SIGNIFICANTLY impact the growth and development of your biofilter microbe population proliferation.

Best used with:
Ammonium Chloride, Sodium Nitrite, Bloom, Carbonate Hardness Increaser – (kH) Generator
