Biological Performance Starts Here

Proven Microbial Solutions for Aquaculture & RAS

Microbes play a crucial role in aquaculture by enhancing the health and productivity of farm aquatic animals.  They can be used to improve growth through maintenance of optimum water quality, immunity and disease resistance.

Nothing is left to chance, as Pure Aquatics have teamed up with Micronovo Technologies who’s qualified microbiologists, produce all our bacterial products in their laboratory to provide super highly concentrated live bacterial products right here in Australia.

We have two product blends (NMI+™ and Micro+™), each contain specifically chosen species for the task at hand. Whether it be NMI+ for your biological filter, or Micro+ for waste assimilation and disease competition, each strain is carefully grown separately, checked for abundance, then blended and packed into sealed aseptic containers.  Growing conditions are key to ensure that they grow just at the right pack, so that they can be acclimatised to ensure the live culture remains alive and stable during its shelf life.  No shortcuts taken, consistent product, consistent results.

Nitrifying Bacteria

NMI+ The Ultimate Biofiltration Bacteria Blend

The Complete Biological Tool Kit: Whether you are starting a new system, recovering after disruption, or pushing higher biomass and feed rates, Fresh or Marine applications, NMI+ is the key to nitrogen management.

Modern aquaculture systems rely on more than just individual additives—they depend on a balanced and well-supported biological ecosystem. At the core of this approach is NMI+, which establishes and maintains the nitrification process that converts toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate.  Adding NMI+ ensures the right strains are present, building that population to accelerate systems capacity prior to introducing your stock.  Thus providing a more stable environment at start-up, stabilises water quality, reduces start up stresses for you and your stock whilst improving long term performance.

The Pure Aquatics NMI+ biological filtration blend supports every stage of nitrogen processing and microbial stability. NMI+ even converts Nitrate to Nitrogen, taking that biological step one step further than anything else on the market.

You can simply add NMI+ to your existing system to boost your biofilters capacity safely with fish present.  Whether you’re adding to a new filter with fish present and ramping up your fish biomass progressively, or by cycling the filter fishless, adding NMI+ is the key.  When pairing with Bloom, Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Nitrite, work together to support reliable nitrification and microbial balance. So biofilters can be commissioned, tested, and balanced in a controlled, fishless environment—allowing operators to build and verify biological capacity before stocking or increasing feed loads.

Bloom enhances this process by supplying the essential nutrients and trace elements microbes need to grow efficiently, reducing cycling time and strengthening biofilter resilience.  Just dose once along with NMI+.

Then add Sodium Nitrite (also one-off dose) and Ammonium Chloride (at an incrementally increasing dose rate) to mimic fish nutrients artificially via a controlled nitrogen source.  This combination seeds your microbiological water purification system, enabling robust removal of toxic nitrogen compounds when your valuable stock is introduced.

  • Improved system resilience during expansion or recovery

Pair with:

  • Bloom to accelerate microbial establishment
  • Ammonium Chloride for fishless cycling
  • Sodium Nitrite to strengthen nitrite conversion

Primary Uses:

  • Biofilter start-up and commissioning

  • Fishless cycling

  • Biofilter recovery after cleaning, power outages, or treatments

  • Increasing feed rates or biomass

Typical Application

  • Dose directly into biofilters or high-flow areas

  • Can be used in freshwater and marine systems

Indicative Dosage

  • Start-up / Cycling:
Dose according to system volume and biofilter size (commonly applied as an initial seeding dose, followed by repeat doses during early cycling).

General Dose Rate – 1ml/100L System Water

  • Recovery / Maintenance:
Lower repeat doses following disruption or increased load.

Exact dosing depends on system design, temperature, salinity, and loading. Contact Pure Aquatics for Technical guidance on your specific application.

Best Practice

  • Dissolved oxygen > 5 mg/L

  • pH ideally 7.2–8.2

  • Disable UV and ozone during initial colonisation (24–72 hours)

  • Maintain adequate alkalinity – (Note that this can be the most under rated aspect of biological filter start up). Alkalinity (kH) is required for the microbes for the biological assimilation and thus breakdown of Ammonia to Nitrite to Nitrate. Without a base level of alkalinity, you will SIGNIFICANTLY impact the growth and development of your biofilter microbe population proliferation.

Carbonate Hardness Increaser - (kH) Generator

Targeted Alkalinity & pH Stability for Aquaculture Systems

Targeted support for maintaining stable pH levels

Pure Aquatics Carbonate Hardness Increaser – (kH) Generator is a high-quality powdered buffering agent formulated to support stable, resilient pH conditions in aquatic life support systems. It provides a balanced spectrum of carbonates and bicarbonates to adjust and maintain alkalinity (kH), helping prevent pH crashes and fluctuations that can stress livestock and impair system performance.

By optimising carbonate hardness, kH Generator plays a critical role in maintaining water chemistry stability and supporting efficient biological filtration.

Key Benefits

  • Maintains Stable pH – Adjusts carbonate hardness (kH) to buffer against rapid pH changes
  • Optimises Water Chemistry – Creates a more resilient aquatic environment for livestock
  • Supports Biofilter Performance – Essential for biofilter conditioning, nitrification efficiency, and long-term biological stability
  • Fast Acting & Easy to Use – Powdered format allows precise dosing and rapid system integration
  • Professional Grade – Suitable for commercial aquaculture, RAS, aquaponics, and advanced aquatic systems

How It Works

Carbonate Hardness Increaser – (kH) Generator provides the buffering capacity that protects aquatic systems from acidification caused by biological processes such as nitrification. Over time, alkalinity is consumed, leading to declining pH and reduced biofilter efficiency.

Pure Aquatics Carbonate Hardness Increaser – (kH) Generator replenishes essential carbonates and bicarbonates, restoring alkalinity levels and ensuring consistent pH conditions that promote livestock health and optimal biofilter performance.

Typical Applications

  • All aquatic life support systems
  • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS)
  • Aquaculture tanks and ponds
  • Aquaponic systems
  • Systems requiring controlled pH and alkalinity management

Function:

  • Raises and balances pH
  • Maintains healthy, stable carbonate hardness (kH)

Indicative Dosage & Use Instructions

Dose Rate: 4 g per 100 L of system water increases alkalinity by approximately 20 ppm

Monitoring: Always monitor both pH and kH during adjustments

Mixing Instructions:

    • Slowly add the powder to a bucket or container of water (best practice: add powder to water, not water to powder)
    • Mix thoroughly until dissolved
    • Introduce the solution into an area of high water flow for even distribution

Avoid rapid changes to alkalinity. Gradual adjustments are recommended to maintain system stability and livestock health.

Aquaculture Probiotic Bacteria

Probiotic Bacteria

Probiotic Microbial MNI+

FOR COMPETIVITE MIRCOBIAL DEFENCE AND WASTE WATER ASSIMILATION

Good microbes play a crucial role throughout aquatic systems, by enhancing the health and well-being and farming productivity of aquatic animals.  They can be used to improve growth, boost immunity and control pathogens.  These good microbes achieve this by: removing fish waste products; outcompeting pathogens for nutrients and stabilising the microbial ecosystem.

Micro+ aquaculture probiotic bacteria is a blend of diverse species of probiotic bacteria chosen for broad-spectrum effectiveness across fish species, diseases and biological remediation of aquatic environments for pristine water quality.

These carefully selected bacterial strains are individually, laboratory grown under axenic conditions, then blended together to ensure you get high concentrations of each pure strain and the most stable and robust culture blend available.   This is critical as each aquaculture system is different.  Once introduced, a subset of Micro+ strains proliferate in your tanks whilst others decline.  However, if the strains were grown together, this would have happened before you used Micro+ … and the strains you needed may have already been suppressed!  We therefore strongly recommend against cheap probiotic mixes that are grown as a mix – they may work if your water happens to mimic the conditions they were grown under, but that’s a big risk.

Long-term system stability is supported through Micro+ and Micro+ Marine, which introduce beneficial probiotic microbes to help break down organic waste, suppress harmful bacteria, and maintain a balanced microbial environment.
